So many people blindly follow certain dental myths thinking they’ll benefit them in one way or another. The truth is, following those dental myths could be detrimental to your oral health. This is because they are simply ‘myths’ – it’s not the truth. Such myths were probably created and spread by people with malicious intent. Being aware of these dental  myths could save your dental health or that of a loved one. So which myths are these? 

Myth 1 : Eating lots of sugar causes cavities

Most people know that sugar is bad for teeth. However, eating lots of sugar will not technically destroy your teeth. The cause of teeth decay depends largely on how much time sugar stays in your mouth. The longer the sugar stays in your mouth, the more susceptible you will be to cavities. Brushing and flossing your teeth after eating sugar will help eliminate bacteria in your mouth thus lowering your chances of getting cavities.

Myth 2 : The whiter your teeth, the healthier they are

Most people go for teeth whitening solutions in order to have that pearly while smile. However, having a whiter teeth doesn’t mean your teeth are healthy. Having fresh breath and no cavities are the true indicators of good oral health.

Myth 3 : Braces are only for kids

Braces are mainly used to straighten teeth and align jaws. However, most people often think braces are only for kids. This isn’t true at all. Many adults also use braces to straighten their teeth and many have experienced their benefits.

Myth 4 : Expectant mother’s shouldn’t visit the dentist

Some expectant mother’s may be reluctant to visit the dentist because of this myth. However, dentists actually recommend expectant mothers to regularly go for dental check-ups during the pregnancy. The reason for regular dental check-ups is to monitor their hormone levels, since a rise in hormones could cause issues such as gum problems.

Myth 5 : Dental health doesn’t connect to the rest of your body

The mouth contains lots of bacteria. Your dental health determines how well the rest of your body will be. This is because your mouth acts as an entry point for bacteria, which may be harmful. Neglecting your dental health could leave you susceptible to diseases such as cardiovascular disease, pneumonia and endocarditis. If you maintain a good dental hygiene and visit your dentist regularly, you’ll greatly reduce your chances of getting such diseases.
